Comments

All fifty specimens collected from this area were identified as males due to the presence of claspers which somehow signifies a strong sex ratio bias. This led to a re-examination of the specimens which revealed the presence of both female and male genital apparatus (hermaphroditism) in some individuals, a first occurrence in cartilaginous fishes (Ref. 53905). The presence of these specimens off the waters of New Caledonia effectively extends the range of distribution of this species.
